Skullcandy Pipe Review

This was our first docking station, and I was looking for something that sounded good and looked great, too. I didn't want anything tacky and large, since I'm funny about the way things look. I bought this dock for my sons, who have basic iPod Shuffles. Although they cannot charge them on this unit, there is none, according to Apple, that both charges and plays for the basic Shuffle; perhaps Apple will work on that next. Anyway, we've found it was a good purchase, because my boys can still play their music, by plugging it in, and I can charge and play my iPhone 3Gs; this was an added bonus, since I had read online that the iPhone was incompatible. Now, there is an error message that pops up, when I dock my iPhone, but you simply click "ignore" and use it anyway. (NOTE: I was given that advice by the manufacturer, and it has proven to be OK) The pipe charges and plays wonderfully, and the remote is very handy, though it can't be used at great distances. And, yes, the remote works when my phone is docked! : ) We're very pleased.

Portable Folding Multimedia Speaker System for iPod/MP3 (Black) Review

These folding Speakers are a surprisingly good value for decent quality portable speakers! There are many sellers rebranding these. We own two sets (black) and I am very pleased with the performance of the these compact speakers, especially at the low price these sell for here on Amazon. Here are my observations:

Pros:
+ Folding; these have a very clever design that allows them to fold in to a small cube for easy transporting
+ Good Sound; produces fairly good sound at all but the highest volume levels (see "Cons", below), at least to my untrained ear
+ Universal Connector; the unit uses a standard mini connector, so this can be used with all of MP3 players
+ Power Options; comes with a USB power cable or it can use 4 x AAA batteries. You can also use a 6v DC power supply (not included)

Cons:
- Bad Instructions; like many products of this type the instructions manual is lacking and, in this case, erroneously lists the power requirements as AC when it should be DC.
- Distortion; at maximum audio levels this sounds pretty bad

Misc:
* iTouch and larger MP3 Plays might not fit as well as others in this (see my picture in "Customer Images"), but they will still work if they have a mini audio jack
* On the iTouch, I found the best sound quality by setting the iTouch volume to about 3/4 max and then making adjustments on the unit's volume wheel

Overall, these are a fantastic value for a set of good quality speakers that have the advantage of being able to fold up for easy carrying!

i'd been researching units of this type for travel. i intially bought (based on the reviews) an Altec Lansing unit (the inMotion) which was a big disappointment (a horribly flimsy plastic "folding" device that looked "iffy" from the start and ultimately imploded after only 30 total minutes of use). after returning the inMotion, i looked for a replacement. the JBL OnStage Micro caught my eye and (knowing that JBL has a very good reputation in the audio market) i bought it "sight unseen". what a good decision it was! the Micro is VERY compact but is EXTREMELY sturdy (made of metal and durable plastic). it comes with a variety of iPod adapters, a remote control, a power supply AND a nice travel bag (which fits and protects all the Micro necessities perfectly...including "seperated areas" for the remote and the power supply). the sound is very clear and articulate. Bass?? how can anyone expect ANY device of this size to have "booming" bass? can you HEAR bass guitars and drums? YES. do the tiny speakers "move air" like an 8" subwoofer? OF COURSE NOT. BUT,..all-in-all, this little thing sounds great (and possesses STARTLING amounts of volume)! it looks cool, too. PLUS, it packs up into its little bag and is ready for its next adventure with the greatest of ease. i am very impressed with the look, the portability, the sound and MOST importantly the QUALITY of this little "sonic doughnut". HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Saitek My Spkr A-100 Personal Stereo Speaker Review

The Saitek My Spkr A-100 is roughly the size of a paperback novel and presents a nice curvy compact design. The speaker has a bit of heft to it -- its not just a flimsy empty plastic shell like many cheap portable speakers. The A-100 takes 4 AAA batteries, has a jack for stereo audio in, optional DC power and a light indicating ON or STANDBY modes. There's no power switch or volume control. The power is turned on by inserting an audio cable into the speaker. Volume in meant to be controlled by the audio source or player. The speaker contains two tiny drivers concealed behind a sturdy metal grill and a small bass port which appears to be baffled internally with an aluminum duct.

I've heard plenty of tiny portable speakers and the vast majority of them share one thing in common -- tinny shrill sound with absolutely no lows. The cheaper versions tend to rattle and distort at moderate volume levels. Not only do tiny speakers generaly lack any bass but they're usually so close together that there's not really much of a stereo effect. Not so with the A-100. I was quite surprised when I plugged the A-100 into my Zune -- not only there was bass (no, not 12 inch woofer level bass but bass nontheless) but there was also obvious stereo with the drivers sitting only inches apart. Impressive! Through the magic of Digital Signal Processing, these tiny speakers actually sound better than many small computer speakers and boomboxes. The A-100 won't rattle your windows and probably won't annoy your neighbors but it'll give you quite decent sound at moderate volume levels for a small room with little distortion.

I'm glad to see the price of these has fallen to more reasonable levels. At $20, these are a steal.

DB Portable Foldable Speakers for Mp3 Players - Black Review

I bought these speakers to use in my office at work.The sound quality is fine (not amazing but good for what I need).My only complaint/confusion is the tray the iPod sits in.The plug fits into the earbud jack, which we all know is at the bottom of the iPod.But when you plug it in, it will not fit in the tray like it shows in the picture.Unless I'm a complete idiot and just can't figure it out.Oh yeah, the other complaint - no directions come with it.SO, if there is a way to fit the iPod in there better, I wouldn't know it b/c nothing came with it to show you how it's done! Folding it up is easy, but you have to detach the tray to do so and there's no place to connect it once it's folded so it has to travel separately (read - easy to lose it).But, it still works fine for what I need and it was only about $8 w/ s/h.Can't beat that price.
