Dual XDVDN8290N AM/FM/DVD Receiver with 7-Inch Motorized, Touch, Full iPod, Full Bluetooth Interface (Black) Review

Dual XDVDN8290N AM/FM/DVD Receiver with 7 inch Motorized, Touch, Full iPod, Full Bluetooth InterfaceJust picked up one of these for my 4-runner. Looks great installed. It is packed with features. Would have given it 5 stars, but it was missing a couple of minor features I would have liked to have seen. Here are my pros and cons:

Pros: Packed with great features including Nav, Ipod connection w/ cable included, Plays DVD +/-RW, Decent bluetooth, built in microphone for use with bluetooth that I have been told sounds pretty good when making a call, easy to use touchscreen interface. All in all, great features considering the price.

Cons: These are nitpicky little things that I felt were missing. None of them should really be a dealbreaker, but thought I would list them for your edification. 1) Ipod playback doesnt browse to Artist>Album like it does on the ipod. WHen you select the Artist, it just lists all the songs by the artist, regardless of what album the songs are on. This makes it a little difficult to find a specifc album unless you use the Album search. If you are like me, that search could take a while. 2) No sat radio. 3) No way to store contacts for use with Bluetooth. You can use your phone to find the number and call, then use HU. 4) No voice command option.

That is what I noticed just after a couple of days of use. Despite these shortcomings, the Dual XDVDN8290 HU is a terrific value for the price. You get 90%+ of the features offered by the more expesive stereos and if you can live with the missing features I have mentioned, I see no reason not to get one if you are in the market.

TomTom ONE Portable GPS Vehicle Navigator Review

TomTom ONE Portable GPS Vehicle NavigatorI've been using my TomTom ONE for a week and a half or so and overall, I'm quite happy with it.Out of the box or after having been moved a significant distance while off, the unit takes about a minute or so at most to determine its position. From a warm start, it's usually a matter of seconds.

Route calculations are generally finished quickly, as are recalculations when you fail to follow the route.Since the shortest rout distance-wise isn't always the fastest, I've diverted from the TomTom's original route and it usually recalculated a new route within moments of me going 'off course.'

I've only run across a couple downsides to the TomTom ONE, neither of which is too serious.First, the maps (at least in the DC/MD/VA metro area) are a few years out of date. There are a number of roads which just aren't in the unit's database. Some streets 'lose' their name for some reason. For example, one section of a street on the map may be labeled as 'Main Street' and another part of the same street may be "Unnamed Road."City names can be kind of iffy as well. When trying to input a specific address, I've often had to resort to entering the address by zip code since the TomTom's map database considers my home to be in a neighboring city name-wise and it won't find my street name in the city in which I actually live.

The second thing that kept me from giving the device 5 stars is the client interface on the computer. The client is supposed to allow the user to access the ONE and perform certain functions on-screen, but apparently is missing some component to actually emulate the unit.I've not gotten a response from TomTom regarding the problem, but have read elsewhere online that they know there's an issue with the client.

Overall, the TomTom ONE is a very nice, basic navigation system.Updated maps and a fixed version of the PC client software will hopefully be forthcoming and would make it a 5 star product.

Garmin GPS 10x Sensor for BlackberryIt works fine and is just as accurate as any other GPS I have had.The only "problem" I have is with the Blackberry, not the Garmin. The Blackberry doesn't give any indication if it is connected. You know it is connected when whatever program you are using starts to work.

GPS 1601 Case w/ Magnet Base Review

GPS 1601 Case w/ Magnet BaseThe item I ordered was the 1601 w/magnet base. The case is clear plastic which you can see in the photos, but the photos do not do justice to the quality of this product. The plastic is very thick and durable with a tough high quality hinge and clasp. The magnet is definitely strong enough to place this item without any fear of the box falling off in rough road conditions, and there is a ring gasket around the lip of the box making it water tight. The particular GPS locator I'm using is a Zoombak Universal locator, and it fits nicely in this Otterbox. It was a little loose in the box, so I added one small sheet of bubble wrap in the lid side, and that did the trick. I would HIGHLY recommend this product to anyone needing a good water tight box for their GPS devise and have concerns about it falling off your car in rough (bumpy) road conditions.

JVC KW-AVX800 7-inch In-dash Multimedia System Review

JVC KW-AVX800 7-inch In-dash Multimedia SystemI purchased this unit specifically because I wanted certain functions. After extensive research, I found that this device said in the product specs that it would do everything I wanted. While technically true, it performed so poorly in some areas that I in the end was disappointed.I have now tried several units trying to get these functions, including this unit.Ultimately, I returned this unit, though because it was not good enough at all of the things I wanted it to do. If you do not care about some of the things I do (or you care about other things - for example, for me DVD playback was irrelevant, so I did not even try this out), the unit might be fine for you.

Keep in mind, in order to do a lot of these things, you need to buy a separate breakout box or adapter that is not included in the price. Here is a list of what I wanted it to do & how it did:

1.Bluetooth integration.Fantastic.Best voice dial integration on any product I tried. There is a dedicated hard button to turn on voice dial that can be accessed no matter what mode the unit is in. Call quality was also good.It also accessed and played in a very good quality my music on my bluetooth smartphone.Truly, best in breed, and if all you care about is bluetooth integration, then this unit is for you.
2.Ipod integration. Not so good.Although the unit is touch screen, instead of listing items on the screen and letting you touch them to select, it instead only goes through one item in a menu tree at a time & then you have to hit an "enter" button that is not marked as enter. It looks like they took a non-touch screen interface & used it in this unit instead of writing one to take advantage of the touch screen capabilities.Worse, it sometimes looses time scyc with my latest generation ipod (I tried both a new 8 gb nano and a new 80 gb classic & had the same problems). Basically, the time would come up with "00:00" quite often, and then stay there.Because the unit continually thinks you are at the beginning of a track, it will not let you rewind. This can be a problem with books on tape or podcasts. This happened at least a few times per week.My installer said JVC was aware of this problem.
3.XM integration.OK but not great. It suffers from the same annoying lack full touch screen integration that exists for ipod, albeit to a much lesser extent. You can, for example, select a preset by touching the channel. However, my xm presets would often disappear from the preset list. What I mean is that the slot for the preset would be there, but the channel name would be missing. This happened almost daily. My installer said JVC was aware of this problem.
4.Control of unit from factory redundant controls on steering wheel.Poor.I wanted to be able to control basic functions on the unit from the factory steering wheel controls so I would not have to take my eyes off the road.Sometimes it worked, sometimes (often) it did not.Volume down refused to work most of the time.

In the end, item 1 was great, item 2 was below average, item 3 was OK, and item 4 was poor.On balance, not good enough for me to keep.

Nokia LD-3W Wireless GPS Module Review

Nokia LD-3W Wireless GPS ModulePros: A really outstanding device. Works better, in most cases, than my Garmen Vista C. When paired with Amaze GPS software (this software is free and works with most mobile phones) it works flawlessly. The battery life is superb.

Cons: The software that is/isn't included is a trial download (Wayfinder around $20 for the full version). After spending hours trying to download it, I gave up. Go for the free Amaze software.
