TomTom ONE Portable GPS Vehicle Navigator Review

I've been using my TomTom ONE for a week and a half or so and overall, I'm quite happy with it.Out of the box or after having been moved a significant distance while off, the unit takes about a minute or so at most to determine its position.From a warm start, it's usually a matter of seconds.

Route calculations are generally finished quickly, as are recalculations when you fail to follow the route.Since the shortest rout distance-wise isn't always the fastest, I've diverted from the TomTom's original route and it usually recalculated a new route within moments of me going 'off course.'

I've only run across a couple downsides to the TomTom ONE, neither of which is too serious.First, the maps (at least in the DC/MD/VA metro area) are a few years out of date.There are a number of roads which just aren't in the unit's database.Some streets 'lose' their name for some reason.For example, one section of a street on the map may be labeled as 'Main Street' and another part of the same street may be "Unnamed Road."City names can be kind of iffy as well.When trying to input a specific address, I've often had to resort to entering the address by zip code since the TomTom's map database considers my home to be in a neighboring city name-wise and it won't find my street name in the city in which I actually live.

The second thing that kept me from giving the device 5 stars is the client interface on the computer.The client is supposed to allow the user to access the ONE and perform certain functions on-screen, but apparently is missing some component to actually emulate the unit.I've not gotten a response from TomTom regarding the problem, but have read elsewhere online that they know there's an issue with the client.

Overall, the TomTom ONE is a very nice, basic navigation system.Updated maps and a fixed version of the PC client software will hopefully be forthcoming and would make it a 5 star product.

TomTom ONE XL 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Maps of the U.S. and Canada Review

I had my choices narrowed down to the TomTom ONE XL and the Magellan Maestro 4040.It was a tough call but I choose the TomTom.In a nutshell, the TomTom is more designed to get you where you need to go and the Magellan is designed to tell you where you are and what's around you.

The Magellan has more current maps and identifies the roads that appear on the screen.The TomTom has fairly current maps but only identifies the roads you are approaching and a few adjacent roads.

TomTom has auto-zoom where the faster you travel, the map zooms out.The Magellan has the zoom feature but nothing automatic.I like the auto-zoom because when your traveling interstates speeds, it's nice to see out ahead of you.

I think the TomTom has the better screen, by a slight edge.The colors/contrast seem to be more pleasant.On the TomTom you've got various map colorizations where the Magellan doesn't.There's one map scheme on TomTom where the roads are outlined in black.It helps distinguish them from the tan background.

Tap the screen on the Magellan and you can scroll around the map.Tap it on the TomTom, you go to the menus.What I'd like to see is a menu button and if you tap on the screen, it tells you where your tapping (i.e. road name).

Reception on TomTom and the Magellan was great and the screen refresh on the TomTom was slightly better than the Magellan.The Magellan seemed more choppy where the TomTom was smooth.

Magellan can double as a speakerphone and the TomTom has the PLUS services.

While I would like TomTom to allow you to show more road names, in the end, this didn't justify the price difference of the Magellan (about $100).I think if you combined these two devices, you'd come close to having a perfect GPS unit.

As they stand, I think the TomTom has a slight edge mainly due to it's screen clarity, redraw/refresh rate, and auto zoom (the various voices you can choose from is a nice touch too).

TomTom, if you're listening on the next map update, please allow us to see road names on any road that appears on the screen!A menu button would be nice too and as an alternative, allow us to tap/identify the roads.

Case Logic GPSP-2 Professional GPS Case for 4.3-Inch Flatscreen GPS Navigators Review

I purchased this case for the Garmin 760. I'm not sure why the other reviewer mentioned it did not fit the 760
but my brand new Garmin 760 fits perfectly inside with extra space! There is 1 inch of extra room on the top and 1/4" on each side. and plenty of room on top to close the zippered lid. All this while slipped into the mesh screened pocket inside.
It came with a soft cloth and wrist strap with a swivel clasp to connect to the case.
This is an awesome case with a little extra room for a memory card and protective shields.

Handstands Jelly Sticky Pad - Color Black Review

Great for keeping things in place in the car.I use it for my sunglasses, take a quick turn and they never slip off the dash.

It will bake in the sun and over time will fall apart but only if you move it, fold it, or bend it often.I'm in Florida though so the sun is a bit stronger.
