Snom M3 Complete Set Review

Snom M3 Complete SetThe Snom M3 works as promised. This makes an attractive option for home voip users, both in terms of price point and functionality. Options for wireless voip range from usb tethered base stations to wifi enabled handsets. While the former is usually the least expensive option, it means a computer has to be on, logged in and often connected to proprietary services (EG skype). The later option, wifi handsets, are sexy but often not ready for prime time. When used outside of closed systems (EG Cisco or Polycom) they often do not support modern wireless standards like WPA or 802.11G; not to mention they carry a hefty price tag. '

The Snom M3 lays somewhere between a traditional cordless phone and a VoIP device. The base station has a ethernet jack rather than a rj45 phone jack. The wireless technology is the same that is used in most traditional cordless phones - DECT which operates outside of the 2.4ghz spectrum (an added bonus when used around wifi networks). DECT has a longer range than WiFi and tends to work through walls more effectively.

Configuration was a snap, pressing volume up on the handset shows the base station's IP address. There is a web based config utility that asks for things like server, user name and password. I was up and running with my Asterisk setup in less than 5 minutes - maybe the easiest VoIP phone setup for my to date.
