I used this cable to successfully connect my LG VX9000 to my computer running Windows XP and my laptop running Ubuntu 6.06 (GNU/Linux).
I was actually surprised when I opened the box and found a small disk of drivers was included with the cable.I didn't really need it, as I had been able to find the right drivers with a bit of searching, and used BitPim (excellent open source software, which is easily found in a search engine).Using that, I was able to access the calendar, contacts, message history, wallpaper, and ringtones (including creating new ones).
However, don't buy this cable if you're looking for a quick and easy solution; buy one of the bundles with self-installing drivers. It took a little work (about 15-30 minutes) to get the cable to operate on each of my systems. On the other hand, if you prefer doing a little extra work in order to save a few bucks, this is the option for you.
