Monster Reference PowerCenter HTS 5000 MKII with Clean Power Stage 4 v.2.0 (MP HTS 5000 MKII) Review

Monster Reference PowerCenter HTS 5000 MKII with Clean Power Stage 4 v.2.0The Home Experience
I have a Sony Grand WEGA KF42WE610 42" using Comcast Cable reception w/o the box (analog reception).I wanted to give a bare bone truth if the HTS5000 is any good or not. After spending 1hr 30minutes properly installing my plugs, making sure my wall socket had 3 prongs (not use a 3 prong to 2 prong cheat which will void your warranty, the HTS5000 will not register as being grounded) and installing some copper wire to grounding the HTS 5000 itself (water pipe, iron/steel fixture tucked behind a wall or heater vent will do nicely) I was finally able to plug the HTS 5000, turn on the Sony STR-DE885 receiver w/ 150 watt preamp sub.I immediately noticed a better quality of sound and I was finally able to maintain its volume (as it would decrease and I would have to turn it up even more). It is the same sound quality as mentioned earlier with the Best Buy receiver. The picture is less pixilated and flesh tones are better (although nothing like Direct TV).Cartoon network has vivid, sharp colors (the colors orange and yellow, blue and purple, etc are distinguished.#1 noticeable difference pronounced even as I write this review is the TV's sound quality! It is as good as my STR-885 Sony Receiver! The sound volume remains the same and the bass is much richer then before. The voices are crisp, clear and audible. In the past I accepted the fact that my TV speakers were no good (reason for buying the STR-885) until today!Another positive trait is viewing Channel 2 via cable. In my area channel 2 is the worst channel, producing a series of thin horizontal to diagonal lines. The lines are very noticeable and distractinggiving a3d effect as you attempt to watch a program only having a 75% viewable screen. After installing the HTS 5000, channel 2 is now 95% viewable. You now have to look real hard to find them from 5' away! This is 2nd biggest improvement as I already have a 4 port, Electroline Drop Amp with single shielded RG-6 cable wire. The coax cable is connected to the HTS 5000 and a Monster top grade coax cable from the HTS 5000 to the TV.
SIDE NOTE
Although double shielded RG-6 coax cable would do better most that I have found do not have a solid copper core.As I was told that the signal travels around the circumference not inside.Regardless if you have solid copper core or not It is extremely important to check your cable connections to make sure the exposed copper wire does not have any marks or nicks around the circumference! If any are found there is a 100% chance you are not receiving the best picture possible. It is a MUST to cut the wire just below the connection, then buy $10-$18 "plastic" 2-Blade rotary coaxial cable stripper to properly strip it, place a coax connector then screw it back on your TV (This is intended for coax cable installed by your cable company.Monster coax cable and such are not part of this side note).
The Home Experience Voltage
When I first turn plugged this unit in Voltage was at 125V and did drop to about 115 volts using appliances in the kitchen.I did notice voltage as high as 125 volts until I turn the TV on then it would drop to 120 volts.I also have my computer, DSL and 18" monitor hooked up to the HTS 5000 and it remains 120 volts with the TV on!I did not notice anything better with the computer DSL or monitor.

Product Description:
The fact is, analog audio equipment is sensitive to a different type of noise than video, just as video is sensitive to a different type of noise than digital, and so on. In the past, manufacturers have used filters to combat the problem of noise introduced via power sources. Unfortunately, the filters were not optimized to attenuate at the different frequencies that are unique to digital, analog audio, and video realms. Products that managed to deliver truly cleaner AC power were thousands of dollars in price, out of reach for most people. Enter Head Monster Noel Lee. An uncompromising audiophile, Lee joined forces with Richard Marsh, the world's foremost expert on AC power, to develop affordable solutions to AC power problems. The result? Monster Clean Power.

Monster Cable MP HTS800 Home Theater PowerCenter HTS800 Review

Monster Cable MP HTS800 Home Theater PowerCenter HTS800The house I live in was built in 1939; they didn't have TVs back in 1939; the outlets aren't even three prong grounded except for one the landlord had to have put in with a higher capacity circuit to accomodate that new fangled gadget--the air conditioner.

So when I picked up my new Sharp Aquos, 1080p, 42" television I was very susceptible to the pitch that I should buy only the most expensive surge protector / line noise reducer possible, the more expensive the better--but I'm not a sucker so I didn't buy it right there and then.

Next store, Best Buy, the salesperson recommends the HTS800 as the minimum, and he recommends more expensive ones but not with as much zeal. The difference is that the Best Buy salesperson doesn't work for commission. The logic is of course that if you're going to spend $1500 for a TV, you might as well spend another $100 or so to protect it from electrical surges and clean up the picture static caused by line noise in both our ancient power supply and by our cable provider.

I find this on Amazon for no less than a 40 percent discount over what I can find it for anywhere else, and order it, but before I open the package I go to the Monster website to make absolutely sure this one is adaquate--and it is.The difference between this and higher end ones is the capacity and the ability for the unit to not only shut off and sound an alarm when there's a surge, but also turn everything back on safely.

This one will turn off everything that's hooked into it and sound an alarm, besides cleaning up the line noise, but that's as far as the description goes.

OK, so I open the package and hook it up.WOW.Absolutely huge difference in the picture on the set.I don't think a more expensive one would make a great difference or that it would be worth it for me--on my level of home entertainment--to pay more for a 'better' one.

And then, one day soon after, I hear an alarm warning me about a dangerous surge, but it doesn't shut down the system.Perhaps just to assure me, another day it does shut down the cable box only AND then came back on.

But the real prize is the picture. There is a huge difference between the quality of the picture on my HD television with this filtering the power and cable lines.I'm thinking of buying another one for my old TV--a Sony Trinitron--because I'm sure it must make a difference there as well.

BOTTOM LINE: If you live in a fairly new building, your electrical system is probably not as much of a hazard as mine, but might be just as noisy. And surges are always a big risk, even if you have all new appliances. For what you spend on items like televisions, stereos, and game systems, it's worth paying a bit more to protect them from the kind of damage that insurance wont cover--wear and tear--as well as allow them to perform as intended--better than they do while on display at your local electronics store in fact.

This item will not only protect your sensitive electronics, but make them better as well.Clearer images, clearer sound, and it's just plain smart design.

Now that I have this one, I definitely would pay for the next level up from this model but I'm also confident that this is all I need.A higher level one has more features, but for my home entertainment purposes I doubt it would really add anything. If one day I really go all out in terms of buying a full home theatre system, I'll spend a couple of hundred dollars on the best one, but this one was made for people like me now who don't have such high end needs but want better-than-expected performance.

Southwestern Bell S60860 Travel Telephone Surge Protector Review

Southwestern Bell S60860 Travel Telephone Surge ProtectorAfter going through about eight answering machines and telephones and grumbling about how "phones these days are such cheap, crappy product-simulations designed to be chucked in a landfill every six months," I spotted one of these little devices in a grocery store and installed it.Lo and behold, turns out it was NOT the phones that were the problem, but just our unstable electric service.

After installing this surge protector, not only did the answerphone stop blowing out, so did all of the phones in the rest of the house.Tuns out, answering machines and cordless phones, since they are plugged in to the electrical system, not only make the phone they are attached to vulnerable, but also any hits they take can travel throughout your home's phone lines and mess up every other phone you have, too!But I haven't had any trouble since starting to use these devices.

Be aware, though, these devices themselves are NOT indestructible.Keep an occasional eye on them - if the little red light goes off, that means they have taken a hit and need to be replaced.I keep a spare around now. Replacing a $10 device every year or so sure beats replacing a phone or two every couple of months!

Belkin 12-Outlet Surge Protector With Phone/Modem Protection - Model BE112234-10 Surge Protectors Review

Belkin 12-Outlet Surge Protector With Phone/Modem Protection - Model BE112234-10 Surge ProtectorsBrief evaluation
----------------
This surge protector allows for up to 12 devices, including 6 'wide' DC adapters to be plugged in. It will protect them against power surges and, in addition, it can protect one Ethernet/phone line (RJ-45) and one coax wire if they are connected to pass through the Belkin surge protector.

My personal experience does validate the claims the manufacturer makes for the features that I am using and I can verify at this time. Currently, I have 9 devices plugged into the surge protector, including 5 DC adapters and 4 2/3-prong plugs. All of the 3 remaining slots are unobstructed and could be used for one additional power adapter and 2 more plugs.

This surge protector replaces 2 older and smaller surge protectors and a one-to-six plug multiplier.

So far, I am happy and, in my opinion and based on its meeting real needs, good design, features and low price I recommend it as (in my view) one of the best it its class.More details
------------
The following are noteworthy, in my view.

Positives:

+ TRUE 12-outlet capacity. Unlike the traditional surge-protected power strips where one beefy AC adapter would cover 2 slots, Belkin's device truly accommodates 6 AC adapters and allows for 6 more plugs to fit in.
+ 'Protected' green light (must be on) provides assurance that the surge protector is operational. When the green light stays off it usually means that the surge protector 'expired' while protecting your device from a power surge and it must be replaced ASAP. [The Belkin warranty promises a free replacement under its warranty terms if you meet the requirements and, it seems, you pay for shipping the damaged unit to Belkin and, possibly, the new unit to you. That's likely to add up to the price of buying a new unit from Amazon and, if you factor in the hassle, probably not worth it.]
+ 'Not grounded' red light (must be off) will warn you when there's something wrong. Belkin's warranty won't apply if the light was on when your devices got fried. I don't know if for a fact but I assume they have a way of telling if that was the case.
+ 10 ft. long chord. This is very important to me and it was one of the criteria that had to be met when I ordered this item.
+ 90 degree plug allows you to easily plug it into a busy 4-plugs wall outlet.
+ Clip for cable management. I find it useful.
+ Thin (one inch) and flat shape. Stands well on a table or on the floor.
+ Telephone and coax cable pass through for surge protection. I don't use these but I'm surprised that something this inexpensive has them. Even better, the phone jacks come covered with some sealing foil and, if you don't use them, they stay near invisible. They are so well hidden, it took me some time to actually find them.

[NOTE: The 'phone' jacks are RJ-45 (Ethernet), not RJ-11 (phone). I know that you can plug an RJ-11 connector into an RJ-45 receptacle and I believe that's okay but I did NOT test this feature on this surge protector.]

Negatives:

- Other than encouraging the unrealistic expectation that Belkin would pay you op to $300,000 on connected equipment warranty, I can't think of anything bad.

Warranty
--------
On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is a worthless warranty and 10 is one that's unbelievably generous, Belkin's should be somewhere around 2 or 3 - 95% of all warranties on devices this cheap are likely to be a 1.

They do promise to replace the item if it sacrifices itself while protecting your devices for as long as you can prove that you didn't do anything stupid, you have a purchase receipt and you ship the damaged item to Belkin at your own expense. It's not clear if they will charge you for shipping you back a new item. This may or may not be something worth pursuing. My impression is that you are not going to save a lot of money to get a 'free' replacement from Belkin and you are likely to waste a lot of time in the process. I'd probably buy myself a new one if the one I have now stopped working but it's good to know that they do have a 'lifetime' warranty. By 'lifetime' they mean the natural life of the product but 'natural life' is not precisely defined.

As far as being reimbursed for damage to devices that this surge protector was expected to protect, my impression is that you are not likely to get much if anything unless you can afford a lawyer and you are willing to sue. You have to meet a long series of requirements that are expressed in several paragraphs of techno-legalese.Rating
------
I will have to repeat myself stating that, in my view, this is one of the best in its class. At the claimed 4156 Joules of surge protection, my devices should be pretty safe and the price is right. I could have and maybe I should have removed one star from the over hyped "$300,000 connected equipment warranty" statement printed on the box but... as sad as it is, everybody does it and Belkin's warranty is better than most so, I am awarding 5 stars on an item that inexpensively addressed real issues I had with protecting many devices clustered in a corner of my basement.

Soon after purchasing this unit I learned that for very little extra I could get and, in fact, I purchased the Belkin 12-Outlet Home/Office Surge Protector with Phone/Ethernet/Coaxial Protection and Extended Cord whichhas 4 extra outlets and comes with a true RJ-45 Ethernet support.

Belkin 12-Outlet Home/Office Surge Protector with Phone/Ethernet/Coaxial Protection and Extended Cord Review

Belkin 12-Outlet Home/Office Surge Protector with Phone/Ethernet/Coaxial Protection and Extended CordThere are a lot of reviews on this product, but I had to add mine. After lightning struck a tree next to our house, our neighbors suffered several appliance failures, including a blown TV. Ours, including our computer survived (plugged into one of these). More amazingly, the outlet this was plugged into blew out of the wall, frying the protector, the TV lost its color for 3 days, but then popped back inand we are still using it. Our electrician says, he's never seen anything like it, but he's recommending this surge protector now.
