Uniden CXAI5198 5.8 GHz Analog Cordless Phone with Corded Base and Answering System Review

I bought this phone after reading reviews on Amazon and Consumer Reports.I was looking to replace a Panasonic phone (model KX-TG2382) that I bought only 2 years ago, and always had problems with (had a clicking noise on the phone line).Since the Panasonic phone was out of warranty, they wouldn't fix it or exchange it!

So far, I have been very happy with the Uniden.It was reasonably priced, and I like having a line that won't go dead in a power outage.

The only drawbacks I can see are the lack of speakerphone on the handset unit.

Another reason I only gave this unit 4 stars is because if you program the handset to be in "AutoTalk" mode, and you have the handset somewhere besides sitting in the cradle, then you can't answer that phone by hitting the talk button.So, I found the handset a bit confusing in this mode.

Also, the answering machine recordings sound a bit too "digital" for me.

However, the voice quality of both the base phone and the handset are very clear, and I'm happy with that!

Product Description:
The CXAI5198 from Uniden is a combination corded/cordless phone system that comes loaded with features. The cordless handset comes with its own charging cradle and utilizes the 5.8 GHz frequency to deliver greater range and clearer reception than many traditional 900 MHz or 2.4 GHz phones.
With the page button, you can easily find the misplaced handset, while headset compatibility gives you the option of hands-free communication. You can access features via an LCD screen found on the cordless handset and corded base unit, and you can choose between one of three menu languages (English, Spanish, or French). The CXAI5198 is compatible with caller ID and call waiting services, and has a 50-number caller ID memory. A 10-number speed dial is also provided for frequently called numbers. Display-and-dial lets you call any number from the caller ID or speed dial display simply by pressing the talk button.
The corded base unit functions as a complete message center, with a built-in digital answering machine and hands-free speakerphone. The answering machine has a 13-minute maximum recording time and a selectable 1 or 4-minute maximum message length. Features such as call screening, memo recording, and call recording are provided; and you can access your messages while away from home with remote message check.
With the intercom function, you can communicate from the base unit to the cordless handset, while three-way conference calling lets both locations talk to an outside call at the same time. You can place a call on hold or temporarily mute your side of the conversation. The base unit is wall-mountable, providing you with extra placement options, and both tone and pulse dialing modes are available depending upon your needs. Uniden also provides a one-year limited warranty.

Panasonic KXTC1851 900 MHz DSS Cordless Phone with Caller ID (Black) Review

I bought this phone because my sony one was utterly unbearable.I had a huge amount of static even when I was standing right next to the base.I have two other cordless phones in the house, both are panasonic and have been running perfectly since we bought them (more than 7 years ago).We drop them, sit on them, throw them around, and they still work.So when I bought this phone, I wasn't worried at all about being disappointed.It looks good and works even better.No static, no fading, and I love the backlit keypad.My one complaint, would be that the CID screen makes it hard for me to put the phone in the right position.My ear usually ends up on the screen rather than the ear piece.I've never had a CID screen before, so I believe that it's something I'll need time to get used to.I wish it had an extension in use feature, but overall, it's a great phone. =)

Uniden DCT7488 2.4GHz Expandable Cordless System with Digital Answering System, Dual Keypad and Call Waiting/Caller ID Review

This is the best phone with excellent features like DND, 10 numbers speed dialing, 100 numbers memory, programmed nos. can be transferred to hand sets by click of a button, the hand sets automatically goes off when you put it on the base etc. etc.. The programming is very easy and logical. The message recording system has excellent features. I have tried several phones but this particular model is the "Cream of the Crop."

I recently purchased this set of phones and am quite satisfied with them. The phones work great, are of excellent quality and for the price, a very good bargain for a dect 6.0 phone. I like that I have a corded phone in case of power failures and can use my corded phone. I love the many features on both the answering machine and the handsets. I would definately recommend this item to a friend.

Uniden CEZA1998 5.8 GHz Cordless Phone with Corded Base, Speaker Phone and Digital Answering System Review

I bought these phones for my 70 year old mother. She has a difficult time with most of the newer, smaller phones; both in setting them up and using them. Although the 62-page user manual intimidated her a bit, she was able to set this phone system up herself. She loves it--the big buttons, the speaker phone, and the special emergency 911 button! The telephone companies need to know there's a whole market of older folks out there who need items like this.

After my own experience with these same handsets on a simpler base without corded handset nor digital answering capability I had no hesitation buying and setting up this model for Mom's needs. Uniden TRU9488 Expandable Corded/Cordless Combination System with Digital Answering System, Dual Keypad, and Call Waiting/Caller ID Review

I would have rated 4 1/2 stars, just for the minor Cons below, but couldn't, so rated the full 5. Can't attest to the interference with a wireless network, because I'm not there yet but....

Pros:
1. Renaming handsets to location, e.g., Bedroom, Cellar, 1st Floor.
2. Can turn main ringer off on base or handset (in the bedroom, for instance), but still use Transfer Call and Intercom features to that hanset. VERY HANDY FOR LARGE OR MULTIFLOOR HOMES. (Ring is also adjustable.)
3. Phone book. Set it up on the base and send to all the handsets.
4. Adds a "1" to long distance numbers from Caller ID just by pushing the */tone key.
5. Listen to messages from any handset.
6. Audible "Message Indicator." Can turn on or off.
7. Lighted keys (on handsets) and displays.
8. Easy to find the instructions for all the features in the manual. (The PDF manual from Uniden has hyperlinks from the Table of Contents and Index.)
9. Can set handset to "Answer" when picked up from charge base. Handy for the "transfer call" feature so there is only one button to push when you pick up. (Otherwise you have to push green button twice if it's a transferred call, not just an Intercom call--kind of clumsy for the technophobes in the house--see Cons.)
10. Range is excellent (just under .1 mile at my house in the country), great for those with large yards.
11. Two or more handsets can be used at one time. You don't have to "Transfer" the call, you can pick up and join the call, just like in the old days. (Some systems don't allow this!)
12. Corded (for power outages) and cordless combination.

Cons (non deal-breakers, in my opinion):
1. Ringers could be louder on "high" setting. If you listen to your stereo on the loud side the phone is difficult to hear.
2. No different ring tones on the base.
3. If you have any technophobes in the house it may be difficult to get them to utilize all the features with you, because of the menus and such. (That is probably more of a personal con than that of the phone!)
4. One or two too many buttons to push to delete a Caller ID number. (Do you really need an "Are you sure?" message for such a simple decision?)
5. Can't delete the Caller ID numbers from all the phones at once. (Although before I got this system that was the case anyway.)
6. Not wall mountable. (Not an issue for me, but I wouldn't let it be a deal-breaker. Why does the corded base HAVE to be on the kitchen wall, for instance.)

I have already recommended this system to friends. Wish I had gotten to my mother before she got the VTech IA5874, which doesn't allow multiple handset use and calls have to be transferred from one handset to the next (plus, no corded base).
