XPAL 88049 IPOWER IPHONETM CASE WITH RECHARGEABLE, PORTABLE POWER Review

XPAL 88049 IPOWER IPHONETM CASE WITH RECHARGEABLE, PORTABLE POWERI travel a lot for work and I'm always scrambling to find a place to charge my iphone in airports, client sites and such.I bought this on a lark as it was so much less expensive than any other battery life extension device for the iphone.Overall, I have been very happy with it. Functionally, it is everything I wanted (it extends my battery life allowing me to use my phone carefree, it stays attached to the phone well enough and it is easy to use).In fact in some ways it has exceeded my expectations. On the whole it works as it is described in it's product info so I will not repeat those.

Some user things not mentioned in the description but worth noting:

1. If you plug your phone into the Xpal iPower2 while it is connected to your PC, it will charge your phone along with the Xpal iPower2.Doing this also allows you to sync your IPOD with your itunes. This was a pleasant surprise and allowed me to carry one less cable when I travel (i.e. using my Xpal as a docking station).

2. The Xpal iPower2 also appears to charge your iphone (~1 hour for an iphone 3G) and not directly power it.Again, I found this to be a bonus. So, I could attach the iPower2 for a while in my pocket and let it charge then put it back into my normal phone case and keep on about my business. Since I'm not crazy about this as an iphone holder or protector (the aesthetics of the holder and the fact that it provides no touchscreen protection concern me, but this is not a criticism of the functionality) I could use it and still avoid the somewhat bulky nature and too colorful look (not a fan of the bright green lettering).

I would have preferred to give this device 4.5 stars, but that was not an option and since the Xpal iPower2 isn't perfect I couldn't in good conscience give it a 5.As I stated above, I am happy I bought it and I use it all the time.I have recommended it to friends and associates as a must have if you really use your iphone for everything and find yourself away from a power source (you GPS users will know what I mean).

Mophie Juice Pack Case and Rechargeable Battery for iPhone 1G (Black) Review

Mophie Juice Pack Case and Rechargeable Battery for iPhone 1GPros:

Works as advertised.Greatly increases battery life.

Some of the early previews complained about the lack of polish on the case - generally it had an inconsistent build quality. The production version is slick and smooth - very appealing to view and the iPhone fits very snugly within the case.It actually makes it more comfortable to use the phone on an extended basis.

There's a very handy LED battery level indicator on the rear of the unit.

Cons:

Adds considerable weight and thickness to the iPhone, but hey, what extended battery doesn't?

Biggest con for some: Despite it having what appears to be a passthough sync port on the bottom, it won't actually sync with the PC.The iPhone needs to be removed from the case and plugged directly to the PC to sync up.Not a con for me since I sync maybe once a month. There might be an issue with the longevity of the case with the somewhat frequent removing of the phone - this needs testing.

Bottom line:

An attractive and very practical alternative to the dongle type battery extenders on the market.Fits the iPhone very snugly.Price should be reduced slightly, but at the moment, it has the market to itself as a take-it-with-you 'pocketable' battery extender.

Energizer XP8000 Rechargeable Power Pack for Netbooks Review

Energizer XP8000 Rechargeable Power Pack for NetbooksAlthough this product is an extremely useful item if you use a net-book or smart phone extensively, especially if you do not have easy access to power, be aware that the "Free Tips" guarantee is a bit overstated. My product arrived with tips for cellphones, laptops and portable DVD players, lacking the tip needed for my net-book. I had to order a "Free" tip, for which I was charged $12.95 "shipping". My tip arrived, with $1.39 in postage stamps attached. $12.00 for? This said the product is ingenious, as a student I am frequently in need of extra power and now am freed from sitting in my car charging between classes.

Sanyo eneloop Mobile USB Booster for iPhone, iPod, PSP, Cell Phones and All USB Powered Devices Review

Sanyo eneloop Mobile USB Booster for iPhone, iPod, PSP, Cell Phones and All USB Powered DevicesSpecs:
Input: DC 5.0V 500mA/1A
Output: DC 5.0V 500Ax2
Built-in Li-ion Battery 3.7V/5000mAh(19Wh)
For use with Adaptor KBC L2ADU only
Figured you should look at the specs first before continuing to read since that should help you rule out whether or not this can charge your device.
******************
This Amazon Nov 2008 offering from Sanyo has 2 usb outlets. Got it in a good sale (instant rebate) in Feb 2008. I usually wait 6m to a yr or after warranty expires before writing a review since that gives me a better idea of how well the product a product performed. I am so happy with this product I am writing about it now with only a month of usage. Compare this to the earlier Li-Ion extenders such as Proporta(UK) or Radio Shack(US) models, MACALLY External Battery which are from 2007 or earlier. Innovation and product improvement is great. I'll report again in 90days if I find out I should have stuck to my regular writing routine.:+)

Approximately 4 charges or 240 min according to manf. specs.

Quick Guide: I only mention this because it took a little digging to other sites to find this info. As other users noted, the instructions got rather compressed in the new packaging of 2009.

Charging the Booster:
Charge with USB or Wall adaptor. LED indicator blinks blue to tell you it is charging.
Steady blue: it's done and ready to use.

Charging your device with the Booster (how to use it):
1) plug USB end into battery. Plug device end to your device. Press on LED OUT button.
It will blink a code.

2) keep an eye out on your charge time. This is like turning on a faucet to fill a bucket (your device). You have to remember to shut off the faucet or else it will keep fililng (discharging until there is no more water (electricity) in the tank). This is an analogy, please do not take it literally (there is no water in the device).

I usually allocate 1 hr to my device but that is approximate depending on how much charging is needed.
If you charge 2 devices at the same time, divide your total time left in 2.

As a newbie, I had wondered why the device doesn't just shut down charging when it's full but this seems standard for any battery extender (alkaline and Li-Ion).The only off switch is the user unplugging the device.

My Palm TX has a lightening bolt indicator to let me know the device is charging. It gives the percentage charged so I know to stop when it has reached 100%. My E2 just has a battery guage. Find out what your device uses to indicate "Power's Up!" I was surprised by one GPS user who reported no charge indicator on her device.

Pros: portability, compact palm size (smaller and stronger than older editions from other companies), 2 USB outlets, battery can be charged from wall outlet or USB port from a computer. Solar charger could also work (could depending on conditions). Flash code to tell you usability left in battery. LED indicator light is bright enough to double as a night light on the nights it's being charged. Clean white plastic casing is easy to spot in the dark.

Cons: no usage meter but you get used to understanding the flash codes with a few repetitions (see specs at end of this review). No carry kit. You can get a nice leather, cloth, canvas pouch from a street fair/ethnic store or the cosmetics section of a pharmacy for a few bucks.

***Things to be aware of*****
* Requires direct usb charger cable, trickle charge cable for Palm devices works but direct power cable charges faster. If you device, MP3, IPOD, cell phone does not have a USB charge cable option, this is not for you so check your device specs/ops before you buy this.

For Palm TX, E2 users: This charge cable works much better than the default trickle charge cable that came with the original packaging. Trickle charge can take up to 5 hrs. Direct charge is usually done in 1 to 1.5 hrs. Amazon specs it for Treo but it is the same one listed in Palm direct for a TX or E2. I have used it for both with the Booster and computer.
USB Charging Cable for Treo 3300WW
* This is for US current. If overseas, you can charge from your computer or use an overseas current adaptor. If sending as a gift, check for an overseas version before shipping this made for US current device because you will also need to include an adaptor. Google for more Sanyo Eneloop products. They also offer solar chargers which I would like to find in US to supplement the wall/usb charge options.

* If you have slippery hands (dishpan fingers) like me, then a little rhinestone stickums on the ports and some rubber paint (craft) or athletic tape (canvas) will help keep a better grip and locate ports easily by touch.

I use this for backpacking/kayaking since it is more efficient than relying on solar power in Northern CAL climes (trees and more trees block sunlight). I live in the state that has some of the oldest (bristlecone pine), the tallest (redwoods), and the largest(sequoias) trees. They are great for history but lousy for solar charging devices. Compared to their cost and still developing tech, this is a good investment but requires access to wall or usb charge source. I am usually charging my devices after sundown and in darkness hence the mods to be able to handle the charging without sight. This new device is very very useful and reliable.

Hackers should be able to figure out additional charging methods.

**************************************
Wt: 130 g
Dimensions: 62x70x22mm
It's small and fits in the palm in general.

**************************
Recharge:
Via the power outlet or computer USB
7 hrs for power outlet
14 hrs for USB outlet

Plug in: steady blue and then flashes
When flashing stops, unit is charged and ready for use.

Voltage: five volts (5vDC) at 500 mA

**Charge your portable device:**
* 240 min total charging cap
* 120 min if charging 2 devices at the same time

Your mileage varies depending on how fast and how much your device pulls.

Flash guide:

Plug in device with device's USB charge cable.
Push DC Out button about 1 sec until LED flashes code.
1 steady flash: USB ports are ON and ready to charge your device.
* 3 flashes: usable
* 6 flashes fast: time to recharge the booster. Don't use anymore to charge your device
* No flash: definitely empty, recharge it.

Hope this helps you in the quest for portable power.

Tekkeon TekCharge Mobile Power and Battery Charger Review

Tekkeon TekCharge Mobile Power and Battery ChargerI've been using this for several months, and more than once it has paid for itself. It is small, lightweight, and has done everything I need it to.

I get several full phone recharges out of a set of four AA batteries, as compared to about one 85% charge from the Eveready® Energizer® Energi To Go™ Instant Cell Phone Chargers charger (although I suspect that the energizer was eating my batteries if I left them in there for more than a day.)

This unit does not discharge batteries no longer how long you leave them in there, so pairing it up with low self-discharge batteries is beneficial. You'll forget you have it until you need it!VIDEO REVIEW TRANSCRIPT:

This is the TekCharge MP1550 mobile power supply and battery charger. This unit allows you to transfer power from standard AA batteries to USB power, and also will allow you to charge rechargeable AA batteries From USB power in an emergency.
This allows you to carry emergency power for cellphones, mp3 players, or anything else which can be charged from a USB port or cable. The maximum output voltage is 5v. You can use either standard alkaline AAs, or use rechargeables to power the unit.
The device is very small and compact, only a little larger than the batteries it contains.

The device comes with a charging cable and several interchangeable tips. The retractable cable on mine arrived frayed to the point where I don't think I could depend on it to work when I need it to.You can see the stray wires poking out from the wire sheath. I could have returned the unit, but I've never had good luck with "one size fits all" cables, and therefore probably wouldn't use it anyway.I bought the cables I need from my favorite auction website. For me, a six inch USB to mini-USB cable will do 85% of what I bought the unit for.A Standard USB A to B cable will do everything else.
The unit outputs power through a standard 5V USB plug. Any device I can think of with a USB charger can be plugged in and receive power through this port. There is an "ON/OFF" switch next to the plug, which controls whether a device is receiving power. There are also several indicator lights on the front of the unit which show how much power is left in the batteries.
The unit will run off of either 2 or 4 AA batteries.I would recommend using four whenever possible, as the lower discharge rate on each battery will mean you get more total power from each cell, as compared to using two at a time. However, it is nice to know that if I need to scavenge two batteries from the charger in an emergency, I will still be able to recharge my phone using the other two cells.
Beside the output USB Jack is a mini-USB Jack labeled "5V in". This is the jack which you can use to charge rechargeable batteries without removing them from the unit. The manual states that the unit will fully charge two batteries in three hours, or four batteries in six hours. It also strongly recommends to recharge batteries only when they are completely empty, so the charging function shouldn't be used to "top off" batteries which are only partially discharged.
I use low-self-discharge batteries, and use a separate Lacrosse BC-900 series charger to keep my batteries well maintained.
The Tekcharge unit does not appear to drain the batteries when it is not in use, which the "energizer" brand AA recharger seemed to do. Also, I get more power out of each cell as a result of the lower discharge rate associated with drawing the power from four cells instead of two.The battery compartment is also much easier to open than the energizer model, which often got stuck or jammed. However, to open the battery compartment you have to push down on the lever next to the USB jack. This is not indicated on the unit, although the manual does clearly state it.
Overall, I am extremely pleased with this unit. It does exactly what it advertised, and feels well built.Again, the cable arrived frayed from the factory, but I would have thrown it away even if it was in good condition. However, for those who prefer playing with interchangeable heads, it would have been an issue.I am pretty confident that it was an isolated problem, and I'll bet customer service would have replaced it had I felt the need to contact them over it.
I keep this unit in my backpack, and it's nice to know that I have two weeks or more of power for my cell phone if I get stuck somewhere without my charger, along with a means of recharging batteries away from home.
