For me the most important feature of a phone is the quality of the sound. I found this phone(s) system to works perfectly. Trading up from an old Panasonic system was well worth the price. The clarity of the sound was amazing. As a senior citizen, my hearing is pretty bad at the high frequencies. With my old system I could barely understand the caller using the hand phone or the speaker phone. No problems now. After getting the speaker base went back to get an additional phone. World Modem V92 Data/fax USB Portable Modem Review

This is the only portable usb modem I have found that supports class 2/2.0/2.1 faxing, (most modems only offer class 1, which means that more of the work needs to be done by software on the computer).
Thanks to the class 2/2.0 faxing, this modem works with the mgetty+sendfax tools on linux.
Most other modems out there don't support faxing on linux.

The only problem is that for kernels 2.6.33 and older, you need to patch and recompile your kernel, with a driver tarball provided on multitech's support website. Kernel 2.6.34 and later ones support this modem natively.

A driver for apple mac OS X is available as well.

Other things I liked about this modem is the informative LED lights, the hidden but audible speaker (didn't expect one on a small USB modem), and caller-id support.

Unfortunately, this modem is very expensive, but it comes with a 10 year warranty, which, along with the class 2 faxing, makes the price slightly easier to swallow.

NOTE: faxing didn't work for me until I used &C0 (DCD on) in the initialization strings. I got error +FHNG:-5 without it, even if I had "ignore-carrier yes" in the settings of the mgetty+sendfax software.

VTech IP811 5.8 GHz Expansion Handset for IP8100-2 Broadband Telephone System Review

We were tired of our cheaper cordless phones not working well or the specific battery was too hard to find and replace, so went for a more expensive and higher GHz model and chose the Vtech (bought the two handset pack).Worked really well for about a year (NYC prewar building), good reception, great range, no interference, nice features, loved the ability to easily replace the rechargeable AAA batteries.

Then one of the hand sets slowly started to die.Bad reception regardless of battery life or quality, screen started to go a few pixels at a time, finally threw it out and went with one handset.Now about two and a half years later I'm shopping for a new cordless phone as the other handset is going the same way...rings only once....bad static....cuts out....pixels on the screen about half gone now.

Loved them while they worked...just didn't last with moderate use.

Portable Emergency AA Battery Charge Extender for the Amazon Kindle (1st Generation) - uses Gomadic TipExchange Technology Review

(Note that this charger is for the Kindle 1.The Kindle 2 has a different power socket, so there is a different Gomadic AA charger for the Kindle 2.)

I'm a heavy Kindle user and I tend to page backwards and forwards a lot, which eats up battery life.So I wanted a lightweight way of carrying some emergency power for long foreign trips.The Gomadic AA charger has worked well for me.

The main weakness is that with standard AAs it is slow to charge the Kindle above 80%.It will take my Kindle from flat to 80% in about an hour, but it takes another six hours to register as 100%.However it does let you read and charge at the same time.

A secondary minor weakness is that the charging tip fits slightly loosely into the Kindle.So you need to be careful to make sure it is fully inserted and stays fully inserted.

Despite those limits, I have been pretty happy.It was a great relief to be able to recharge my Kindle off AAs when none of my power adapters would fit into the hotel power outlets.(Yikes.)

I also own a spare Kindle battery.The main drawback there is that I need to remember to keep it charged.The nice thing about AA batteries is they have a long shelf life and they are almost universally available.So I have ended up carrying the Gomadic charger rather than my spare Kindle battery.I find it reassuring to know that as long as I can find AA batteries I can keep reading!
